Call Me Izzy
“Smart’s performance lives up to her name: measured and nuanced, both vulnerable and full of rage,
depending on which of the handful of characters she’s inhabiting.”
– Broadway World
Smart plays Isabelle Scutley, a rural Louisiana woman trapped from the age of 17 in an abusive marriage. But sustaining Izzy — her preferred monicker — is her ability to express her secret self through her private poetry. It’s when her writings go public that she discovers the power of words. Though Wax sometimes writes in all-too-familiar trauma territory — the nature of which is revealed early in the play and looms throughout — Smart elevates the material and makes Izzy’s story feel fresh, authentic and always compelling. – By Frank Rizzo for Variety.
Call Me Izzy has a run time of 1 hour and 40 minutes with no intermission and has a trigger warning for depictions of domestic abuse and abusive relationship dynamics.
“Jean Smart is a force to be reckoned with in this sweet, funny, painful, intensely sad one-woman show,
and Jamie Wax’s script will stay with you long after the curtains close.”
– New York Theatre Guide
Jean Smart
After an extended 25 years away from Broadway, Jean Smart makes a triumphant return to portray Izzy with vulnerability, wit, and resilience, delivering a performance described as “soul-stirring” and a “masterclass.” Jean began her acting career on the stage at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and other regional theaters, with roles in Much Ado About Nothing and A Moon for the Misbegotten. She has since earned six Emmys ‘s for performances in Frasier, Samantha Who?, and Hacks, becoming only the second woman to earn an Emmy in lead, supporting, and guest categories.
“Smart, returning to Broadway after some 25 years, brings astonishing clarity and depth to the part.
Spinning an enticing yarn from shopworn material… she delivers a performance that feels deceptively featherlight while demonstrating total command.”
– Washington Post
